In February 2008, after 28 years, I retired as a captain from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and began a new career with Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold as a corporate security manager.   Freeport-McMoRan aquired Phelps Dodge in 2007 and became the largest publicly traded copper company in the world.

On July 27, 2007 George Cortez Jr., my son-in-law, was shot and killed in the line of duty while making an arrest.  He was a 2 year member of the Phoenix Police Department and was working in the Maryvale Precinct when the shooting occurred.

He was a great man, father, and police officer and we miss him very much.

In October 2010, Edward Rose, the man who shot George, was sentenced to the death penalty. His girlfriend Norma Lopez, who was with him at the time, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for her part.

1969 Camaro
1969 Camaro

This is going to be my project over the next year or two! It is a 69 Camaro which was born as a standard coupe, but over the years was changed into a Z28 clone.  My plans are to make it into a Super Sport (SS) "Tribute" car. The plans include changing the color from black to it's original "Hugger Orange" color. I will add hockey stripes on the sides, give it a white vinyl top, change the hood to the "SS" style with the chrome louvers, change the rear end to a 12 bolt, and change the interior color from red to its original black.  The engine is a 350 which will work real well and has already been tricked out with Edelbroch accessories. Should keep me busy for some time to come! The picture below is somewhat representative of what I am shooting for except without the rally sport headlights and orange interior as in the picture.

This is the ultimate goal!

Sheriff Arpaio & Tom Tyo
Tom & Sheriff Arpaio

I am thankful to have had such a wonderful career at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.  I made a lot of really good friends and worked in many different facets of the Sheriff's Office.  I spent the last 9 years in Enforcement Support, the last 2 as the Captain.  I worked with a lot of good people, deputies, detention officers, and civilian personnel.  I also got to work with a lot of great volunteers, the posse and reserve deputies.  Through a lot of hard work and the dedication of the staff we always got the job done.
